Fashion and Beauty in the Time of Asia centralizes fashion and beauty in the shaping of Asian modernities and the formation of the so-called Asian Century. The authors assembled here train our eyes on sites as far-flung and varied and yet as intimate and intimately connected as Guangzhou and Los Angeles, Saigon and Seoul, New York and Toronto, in order to map the transnational and transregional connections that have made new worlds and life paths possible. By connecting individual stories to large-scale circuits, this interdisciplinary anthology moves beyond common characterizations of Asians and Asian diasporic subjects as simply abject laborers or frenzied consumers of fashion and beauty. Instead, this collection analyzes what modern subjects look like, what they wear, how they work, move, eat, and shop, helping us to see the forms of modernity taking shape in Asia—the aspirations it expresses and the sensibilities it endorses—and the ways they inform our understanding of race, nation, and the global.Less

The growing partnership between India and Japan is one of the most keenly observed developments of the Asian Century. This chapter studies the six decades of diplomacy that preceded this strategic embrace and examines three potential explanations for it—a changing security environment, the logic of economics, and a congruence of political values. Starting in the late 1940s, the chapter traces the relationship from its initial warmth to the estrangement of the Cold War, the rupture caused by India’s nuclear tests of 1998, and the current phase of newfound intimacy. While the pressures of a changing security environment have played a vital role, India and Japan have become closer primarily through what Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has termed ‘value-oriented diplomacy’, or the shared democratic ideals that create a foundation for mutual understanding.Less

With the global balance of power gradually shifting towards Asia, a strengthened India-Japan partnership is poised to have a major impact on the twenty-first century. Unlike some of Asia’s other major powers, the two countries are unburdened by a historically difficult relationship and they have numerous areas of common or complementary interests where they can engage in mutually beneficial cooperation. These sectors span from economics to energy, security, and global governance. However, in order to make deeper cooperation a reality, the two countries will have to overcome their differences, which are apparent across many areas of their societies including national ethos, business, and government bureaucracy. Taking all of this into consideration, the two countries would have much to gain if they were able to channel their resources into a strengthened partnership.Less
