This book provides a history of the most consequential 35mm motion picture camera introduced in North America in the quarter century following the Second World War: the Arriflex 35. It traces the North American history of this camera from 1945 through 1972—when the first lightweight, self-blimped 35mm cameras became available. The book emphasizes theatrical film production, documenting the Arriflex’s increasingly important role in expanding the range of production choices, styles, and even content of American motion pictures in this period. Its exploration culminates most strikingly in examples found in feature films dating from the 1960s and early 1970s, including a number of films associated with what came to be known as the “Hollywood New Wave.” The author shows that the Arriflex prompted important innovation in three key areas: it greatly facilitated and encouraged location shooting; it gave cinematographers new options for intensifying visual style and content; and it stimulated low-budget and independent production. Films in which the Arriflex played an absolutely central role include Bullitt, The French Connection, and, most significantly, Easy Rider. Using an Arriflex for car-mounted shots, hand-held shots, and zoom-lens shots led to greater cinematic realism and personal expression.Less

Throughout his life, Fleming was hard to categorize as either Democrat or Republican. However, when he had opinions, they tended to be very strong, including his intense dislike of Communism. For this reason, when the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals (MPA) was formed, Fleming became an executive member dedicated to preventing the rise of Communism. The FBI watched the MPA but never took it over, sometimes aiding the organization because of what it saw as a mutual interest. The MPA went on to help the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Unfortunately for Fleming, his involvement with the group led to accusations of anti-Semitism. Though this charge did not completely tarnish Fleming’s reputation, he slowly withdrew from the MPA and back into a more quiet political life.Less

This concluding chapter reflects on the various market strategies used by comic book companies to survive the decline of the comic book industry as well as the emergence of superhero films in the twenty-first century. The major comic book companies managed to survive the setbacks of the 1990s by catering to their traditional fans while simultaneously drawing in new readers through the publication of non-traditional superhero fiction inspired by the deconstructionist trends of the 1980s. This mix of innovative storytelling and more traditional approaches produced comic books that both earned critical acclaim and generated a modest rise in sales, keeping the industry alive into the first decades of the twenty-first century. Despite the uncertainty of the future of comic books, superheroes themselves seem more relevant today than ever before. Moving off the comic book page, they have transitioned to other media with increasing success, most notably in the American motion picture industry.Less
