This book seeks to explain and understand aspects of the firm in the Japanese economic system, and to explain the corporate success of Japan. The book is interdisciplinary, uses theoretical and empirical work, and features contributions from the fields of institutional economics, organizational theory, economic history, and sociology. Major themes are the recognition of business practices and the recognition of the diversity of experience within Japan, for example, analysing small or medium-sized firms separately from large companies. Several chapters deal with the transferability or adaptability of the Japanese experience to the Nordic or Anglo-American context.Less

This concluding chapter argues that Asian American fiction boasts a long and rich lineage, and its body of texts contains a multitude of unforgettable characters and compelling themes. Within this impressive archive, writers often produce narratives imbued with autobiographical and autoethnographic valences. And yet the parallels among author, narrative perspective, and fictional world can still result in certain presumptions about the kinds of stories Asian American writers can tell. For instance, a well-known writer such as Amy Tan might be presumed to create narrative perspectives centered only on Chinese or Chinese American characters, which in turn illuminate only Asian American social contexts. The book analyzes these simplifications and to unravel the bind among author, narrative perspective, and fictional world by exploring a large and equally important literary archive.Less

This introductory chapter talks about the individuals engaged in the ongoing activity required to work at Ravenwood College on a daily basis, specifically, their struggles, competing agendas, tensions, triumphs, and deliberations. Much of this analysis designates the institution's position in a hierarchy of excellence, particularly, on the lower end of the scale. In the ongoing, postsecondary hierarchy premised on elitehood, selectivity, resources, and prestige, Ravenwood was peripheral at best. Despite the extraordinary commencement ceremony, and what some call Ravenwood's “special spirit,” the American context positioned the institution as mediocre. Its service to nontraditional students (in terms of race, gender, and class) was starkly overshadowed by the pressure to maintain its position in the meritocracy.Less

This chapter examines how Archbishop Iakovos's successor, Archbishop Spyridon, made a mistake on the side of tradition. It illustrates the limits and potential drawbacks of Greek Orthodoxy's reliance on invoking its history. It also explains how the patriarchate recovered the lost ground by appointing Demetrios as archbishop in 1999. The chapter investigates the religious dimension in several articulations of Greek American identity that was becoming more pronounced and outlines the patriarchate's involvement in Greek Orthodoxy's affairs in the US. It summarizes the Greek Orthodox Church's trajectory throughout the twentieth century and analyzes its ability to balance between adapting to the American social context and maintaining its ethnic roots, which enabled it to play a significant part in defining Greek American identity.Less
