This chapter describes events in the first months of Mayor David N. Dinkins’s administration, among which was the black boycott led by activist Sonny Carson against Bong Jae Jang’s Red Apple green grocer store in Brooklyn. The boycott was sparked by a Haitian immigrant woman’s accusation that Jang and his employees assaulted her for allegedly stealing. Other events include the stigma faced by Haitian immigrants; the suspension of Alton Maddox, Tawana Brawley’s attorney, from practicing law in the state; Nelson Mandela’s arrival in New York City; and a strike at the New York Daily News.Less
