This chapter focuses on the ongoing feud between Thayer and Albert C. Barnes regarding articles on art aesthetics published in The Dial. Barnes first demands that a certain art critic be given the prestigious Dial Award—a demand Thayer rejects. Barnes next has his tutor write a response to an article on art that appeared in The Dial, but demands that the magazine not carry a response to it. Once again, Thayer ignores Barnes’ demand. The conflict soon escalates, and Barnes threatens to expose Thayer as a “pervert” and to assault him if he doesn't give in.Less

Nabokov left France in 1933 to lecture at the Barnes Foundation. Shortly afterward, his ballet Union Pacific, on a scenario by poet Archibald MacLeish, the first ballet on an American theme, triumphed in a choreography by Massine. Nabokov’s friendships in New York included photographers Cartier-Bresson and Beaton and composer Elliott Carter, to whom he always remained close. In 1936, after visiting his mother in Nazi Germany, he took up a position as music professor at Wells College, in upstate New York.Less
