This chapter reviews several processes that change the Islamic tradition, not only by molding it into a new format, but also by folding the child's experience of daily life into his understanding of God's will. It looks at the interpretation of culture and the culture of interpretation, and shows how elementary schools introduce students to the proper political and social use of official religious texts. The chapter then discusses the goals of modern religious education at the primary level, and the ways textbook authors emphasize Islam's place in a child's daily life. It also studies the school and family as sources of moral authority, and identifies several supplements to the public sector instructional media.Less

This chapter shows that the flamen and flaminica Dialis served the gods together as priest and priestess of Jupiter. Until fairly recently, however, modern scholars have either denied or heavily qualified the official priestly status of the flaminica Dialis, describing her instead as the Roman equivalent of the pastor's wife. This analogy is inappropriate in light of the ancient evidence for her status and religious activities. The chapter then reconstructs the flaminica's ritual activities and establishes a new framework for understanding them. The ancient evidence, though often intractable, demonstrates that the flaminica Dialis was a religious official in her own right with her own role, both in separate rituals that she was responsible for independently and in rituals that she shared with her husband, the flamen.Less

This chapter presents a column published on March 12, 1908, beginning with a piece about an inquisitive child asking his mother questions. A second piece entitled Six Place Settings and No Food literally speaks of six (or, in a variant, a hundred) water pitchers and bowls (for guests to wash their hands) but no lunch or dinner. The purport is plain: the peripherals are available, but the one item essential for the activity is missing. Here Dehkhodā talks about how the country suffers from too many political, civil, and religious officials, who bask in their own importance and are incapable of cooperation with mere subjects. Therefore nothing meaningful is accomplished, and the needs of the people are ignored. The third piece is a riddle.Less
