This chapter charts the early history of the public health workforce based in local government and the impact following the move of public health doctors and public health nurses to the NHS in 1974. It sets out the struggles of public health doctors as they sought recognition as the new medical specialty of community medicine with its own Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians.
