This chapter examines the importance of quality daycare, including after-school programs through high school, for children. More specifically, it considers the relationship between daycare and juvenile delinquency. It begins with an overview of private daycare in the United States and its problematic consequences as compared to European public child care and goes on to discuss the advantages of affordable, high-quality child care. It then reviews a number of longitudinal studies that focus on participants in specialized daycare and early educational programs in various communities in the United States. These studies show that participants in high-quality preschool care tend to perform much better academically and engage in far fewer delinquent behaviors than members of the control groups. The chapter proposes a progressive vision of child care, one that emphasizes high quality and a comprehensive public policy.Less
