This chapter addresses social injustice in relation to assaultive violence and war. It considers social injustice as a cause of violence and the influence of cultural forms of injustice, including hate-motivated violence, and gender inequality, and the influence of institutional forms of social injustice, including political repression and unfair distribution of justice. Boxes in the chapter describe the relationship between war and public health and also genocide. The chapter gives suggestions on what needs to be done, including increasing the cost of injustice, deconcentrating poverty, reducing social distance, redefining harmful cultural norms, and strengthening democratic institutions.Less
