This chapter proposes an approach to the problem of understanding the mind in a somewhat different way from the traditional ways used in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Instead of tackling the mind problem head-on, it approaches it by investigating phenomena that are robust and repeatable yet do not fit the big picture of cognitive science as currently understood. This approach is especially likely to be useful in cognitive science since it still is very much in its infancy. It was a commonly used—and immensely successful—strategy in the early days of physics and biology.Less
