This chapter describes Martí’s writing about the waves of immigration that were reaching the United States at the end of the nineteenth century. His chronicles reported on Irish, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Jewish, and Chinese arrivals and told of their problems and prospects. He commented on immigrants and education and the connections between immigration and labor issues. He covered the major labor story of the 1880s, the Haymarket riot in Chicago. In addition to commentary about events and issues, Martí discussed immigrant customs. His reporting on the Chinese in the United States contrasts with his lack of attention to the Chinese presence in Cuba.Less
