The rivalry between Britain and Spain serves as the backdrop to Alejandra Dubcovsky’s essay about the limitations of communication between European capitals and the colonial frontier as the aspiring global powers sparred over the construction of a modest British fort. Neither formal diplomatic negotiations in London nor the more informal, spontaneous efforts of local commanders could produce a common framework for the resolution of the dispute. Too often the parties spoke past, rather than with, each other as they each tried to assert their control over a patch of ground on the other side of the sea.

Frontiers and borders are likely to remain significant on the world stage in the twenty-first century in political, economic, and sociocultural contexts. Frontiers are dynamic areas where identities are created, contested, maintained, negotiated, or manipulated. Different aspects of frontiers and borders are illustrated in this volume, and by taking the border and the frontier as a point of departure, this collection of studies seeks to shift the analytical focus from center to someplace else, from locus of power to places of contested power, and from places with presumed stability to places of presumed disorder, tension, and instability. There is much work in this area for bioarchaeologists, and with this volume we hope to concurrently open more venues to frontiers and borders studies and to raise many more questions.

This chapter examines the political context of sports relationship with the European Union (EU). The 1994 Larive report links the active or passive participation in sport with the social and cultural identity of people. The Pack report reflects the more socio-cultural tendencies within the Parliament. The Television Without Frontiers (TWF) Directive goes against a trend in European sport favouring a free market in broadcasting. The Amsterdam Declaration added impetus to the socio-cultural agenda whilst equipping them with an additional institutional venue to exploit. The Helsinki report represents a continuation of Parliamentary thinking regarding the importance of extending the right of free movement to all EU citizens. Policy change is evident within the sports policy subsystem. The regulation of sport in the EU has been politicised. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) rulings/decisions are significant in that they mark the birth of an area of EU law called ‘EU sports law’.

There are twelve chapters divided into three sections: 1) life, death, and mortuary practices; 2) colonial entanglements, frontiers, and diversity; and 3) identity and the body under colonialism. The first and second sections offer a global perspective on the effects of colonialism and culture contact on community health: indigenous converts living in the frontier, peripheral towns, lower class suburbanites within major urban centers, and recent European immigrants. The contributions move beyond indigenous communities. Class, ethnicity, hybridity and contact longevity (entanglement) flesh out that colonialism was not a one-way process of cultural exchange, health decline, extirpation, or even a bad thing. The chapters’ undercurrent is resilience, with bioarchaeological data providing evidence of dietary and health changes reflecting the various degrees different communities responded and adjusted to colonialism. Colonized Bodies, Worlds Transformed‘ssecond accomplishment is to define bioarchaeology of colonialism that is not focused on diet, disease, and demography. Colonized Bodies, Worlds Transformed successfully justifies the value of diverse approaches that use body modification (Tiesler and Zabala), human skeletal morphology (Buzon and Smith, Danforth et al.,Ortiz et al., Ribot et al.), and ancient DNA (Danforth et al.) to explore what a bioarchaeology of colonialism can offer—the study of identity, hybridity, and ethnogenesis.

This chapter introduces the archaeology and history of the Upper Amazon. Although little studied in comparison to Andean archaeology in the neighbouring highlands, the Upper Amazon (a region including waterways such as the Amazon River and Marañon River) has long thought to have been an important region to the development of social complexity in western South America. Through an overview of the volume, this chapter highlights major issues and themes that have been the focus of Upper Amazonian archaeology, including exchange and trade, frontiers and borderlands, and interregional interaction. It finishes by suggesting future directions for the field.

The purpose of this chapter is to explain, in the context of telecommunications law and regulation, the regulation by EU and UK law of audiovisual and radio media services. Overarching principles are found in the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which takes an approach described as technologically neutral, but established two top-level categories of regulation, for television (or linear) services and on-demand (or non-linear) services. In the case of television services, a wide range of standalone works and comprehensive Sections or chapters on the regulation of broadcasting are available. As such, the focus here (with a view to the interests of readers) is on licensing of content and multiplex services by Ofcom and the handling of complaints about those services, with a bias towards the standard licences for services on cable, satellite, internet, and digital terrestrial platforms, and the regulation of DTT multiplexes and of on-demand services, as opposed to detailed description of the BBC and the commercial public service broadcasters. Indeed, the European Court of Human Rights has regularly found that the regulation of communications infrastructure can have a real impact on the receiving and imparting of information.
