This introductory chapter gives an overview of the geographical landscape of the Everglades, Florida, and the issues surrounding it. The lush and exotic landscape of Everglades encouraged widespread practices of drainage development throughout America. Yet, even as the dredging machines plowed forward to create canals through the muck, concerned scientists and citizens lobbied to protect a landscape they considered both unique and fragile. The chapter presents the aim of the book to reclaim the landscape as a place of people and human history. It discusses the meaning of being “human” through changing relations with other animals, plants, material objects, and the like. It describes the stories of the most famous Everglades outlaws, the Ashley Gang. The fiction of Laura Upthegrove is also narrated.Less
