Book V, also known as the Liber Quaestionum (The Book of Questions), comprises sixteen “interrogations,” each divided into questions and answers, and a number of separate “revelations” that are interspersed among them. This apparently scholastic debate raises a number of theological issues, such as the created order of the world, natural theology, Christology and aspects of the Incarnation, and the justice of God's providence and divine grace. The introduction to Book V examines some of the themes of individual skepticism, the quest for theological understanding, and intellectual arrogance. It also discusses the identity of the monk-on-the-ladder and considers the role of the interspersed revelations in the book.Less

This is the second volume of the translation of the Revelations of St. Birgitta of Sweden. It contains Book IV and Book V, the so-called Liber Quaestionum (The Book of Questions). Book IV includes some of the saint's most influential visions, especially those on the subject of the papacy, purgatory, and the Hundred Years' War. Book V takes the form of a learned dialogue between Christ and a monk standing on a ladder fixed between heaven and earth. The argument centers on the way in which God's providence is constantly misunderstood and rejected by self-centered humans; and it ranges over a number of theological issues, such as the created order of the world, justice, Christology, and the Incarnation.Less

Completing this examination demonstrates that sufficient knowledge has been acquired to fulfil the requirements of a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, according to a curriculum agreed upon across Europe. This preparation book adopts the same ‘Best of Five’ question format used in the ESEGH. Furthermore, it covers the breadth of the curriculum, and its composition has been designed to exactly match the relative proportion of questions on each topic area found in the examination. Each of the 300 questions contained in the book is accompanied by an answer, a set of succinct bullet points of key ‘take-home’ messages and a short summary of the relevant background, evidence base, and up-to-date European guidelines.
