This book provides a full-length study of the screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin, whose work for film and television includes Z Cars, The Italian Job, Kelly's Heroes, The Sweeney, Reilly—Ace of Spies and Edge of Darkness. With a career spanning six decades, Kennedy Martin has seen the rise and fall of the television dramatist, making his debut in the era of studio-based television drama in the late 1950s. This was prior to the transition to filmed drama (for which he argued in a famous manifesto), as the television play was gradually replaced by popular series and serials, for which Kennedy Martin, of course, created some of his best work.Less

This chapter explores the biographical sketch of Francis Troy Kennedy Martin, who was born on Bute, an island on the Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland, on 15 February 1932. It provides a brief description of the route by which Troy Kennedy Martin arrived at his name. In 1964, Kennedy Martin wrote his first scripts for an ITV company including the first of six episodes for Redcap, an ABC Television series about the military police. Two years later, Kennedy Martin was involved with another BBC drama documentary when he assisted Andy McNab with the dramatisation of his book, Bravo Two Zero. Troy and Ian Kennedy Martin were ranked twenty-seventh in a poll of the fifty most influential figures in British television. Troy Kennedy Martin's contribution to British television extends far beyond these three programmes.Less

To conclude the exploration of sixty years of TV antiquity, this final section draws out some of the key aspects that run through the shows discussed in the book, such as the importance of serialisation and later syndication and collaboration in the development of TV antiquity; the new heroic ideal developed in these shows, combining domesticity and politics; and the marginalisation of religious practice in many of the programmes discussed. In addition, the conclusion also briefly examines the most recent shows such as Olympus (2015), Britannia (2017) and Troy: Fall of a City (2018) and suggests some of the possible directions for TV antiquity. Here, the most notable developments are a greater blend of history, myth and fantasy as well as the blurring of boundaries between documentary and fictional drama.Less

Chapter Six argues that Troilus and Cressida and The House of Fame share a distinctive soundscape that collapses the distance that normative literary history would put between them. Trojan laud becomes the tittle-tattle of Southbank stews. Both works eliminate difference between voice, sound, noise, and air. In both works, the trumpet plays a key role. Resulting from its brazen lack of valves, the trumpet blows literary repute and stinky fart with insouciant caprice. The final part of the chapter considers the crucial role of silence and name in each work. The Chaucerian narrator refuses to anchor the free-floating tidings of Troy with the authority of a Proper Name. The figure of Antenor in Troilus is his opposite: a name without a voice.Less
