This chapter is a guide to the maritime historiography of Greece from the 1970s onwards. It explores the beginnings of Greek maritime history, pinpointed by the publication of volume Greek merchant history, and moves through shipping, naval history, corsairing, piracy, and studies of the port cities of continental Greece. The major concern of Greek maritime historiography is the lack of shipping statistics and data, a gap which the establishment of the Pontoporeia historical register is currently attempting to fill.Less

This book compiles seven essays concerning changes to merchant shipping over the hundred and fifty years between 1850 and 2000, and spanning a range of countries, with particular focus on Norway, Greece, Japan, and England. The essays are linked by the theme of change: from traditional to modern shipping; in fluctuating cargo demands; from sail to steam; wood to iron; in improvements in communication technologies; in political natures and affiliations; in seafaring skillsets; in the advent of containerisation and advent of globalisation. The overall aim is to construct a solid international context for the merchant shipping industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - primarily to aid a major Norwegian deep-sea merchant marine project. The book contains an introduction that sets out these aims, and seven essays by maritime historians which form part of the international contextual whole, though all can be approached individually.Less

This chapter discusses the organisational and managerial practices of Greek shipping enterprises during the twentieth century, seeking to answer why these structures changed very little over the course of the century, and how their organisational structures gave them a positive, competitive advantage in an internationalised shipping industry. The author is particularly interested in the family-oriented nature of the greek shipping industry in comparison to other nations. The chapter also contrasts Greek-owned shipping enterprises during the interwar years with the post-war years that followed.Less

This chapter assesses the relatively unexplored sources concerning Greek commercial shipping prior to the mid-eighteenth century, in attempt to bridge the gap in information and data concerning Greek seamen. In addition to examining state archives and port registries, sources compiled include notarial deeds and social histories of Greece. Documents and archives relating to Venetian and Ottoman trade with Greece have also been included, to provide data absent from Greek records. The chapter concludes by suggesting more research and more cross-referencing with international records is necessary to further study the maritime history of Greece.Less

This essay outlines the evolution of the Greek migrant market during the boom years of transatlantic migration from the eastern Mediterranean, the 1890s to the 1920s. It aims to define the various approaches to competition amongst migrant firms operating in the Greek migrant market. It places the market both in regional and continental contexts; determines the opportunities for transatlantic migration from Greece; explores the importance of Greek emigrants to the French shipping industry; provides reasons for the establishment of an Austro-American shipping route; and discusses international and regional competition through fare increases, advertising campaigns, and economic patriotism. It concludes that competition amongst migrant shipping companies was both a key feature of the history of transatlantic migration, and a particularly antagonistic practice within the Greek migrant market.Less
