Best of Five MCQs for the Endocrinology and Diabetes SCE is a dedicated revision guide containing 350 ‘best of five’ multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering the main themes of the specialty curriculum. The questions mirror the format which trainees in diabetes and endocrinology can expect to find in the Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) and cover all of the key topics, including the pituitary and hypothalamus gland, the thyroid gland, bone disease, the adrenal glands, reproductive endocrinology, diabetes, and lipid metabolism. The majority of the questions are based on clinical scenarios, with an emphasis on investigations and management of complex endocrinological disorders based on an evidence-based approach. Explanatory answers include references to guidelines and other sources to enable further reading and study. This is the most widely read and recommended revision book which will help candidates prepare and pass the Endocrinology and Diabetes Specialty SCE.Less

The words that physicians use with patients have the power to heal or harm. The practice of medicine is shaped by the potent metaphors that are prevalent in clinical care, and military metaphors and the words of war bring with them unfortunate consequences for patients and physicians alike. Physicians who fight disease turn the patient into a passive battlefield. Patients are encouraged to remain stoic, blamed for “failing” chemotherapy and sadly remembered in heroic obituaries of lost battles. The search for disease as enemy shifts the doctor’s gaze to the computer and imaging technologies that render the patient transparent, unseen and unheard. Modern treatments save lives but patients can be the victims of collateral damage and friendly fire. In The Language of Medicine, Abraham Fuks, physician, medical educator and former Dean of Medicine, shows us how words are potent drugs that must be tailored to the individual patient and applied in carefully chosen and measured doses to offer benefits and avoid toxicity. The book shines a light on our culture that deprecates the skill of listening that is, paradoxically, the attribute that patients most desire of their doctors. Societal metronomes beat rapidly and compress clinic visits into stroboscopic encounters that leave patients puzzled, fearful and uncertain. Building on research about physicians in practice, the experiences of patients, stories of medical students as well as the history of medicine, Dr. Fuks promotes an ideal of clinical practice that is achieved by humble physicians who provide time and space for listening, select words with care, and choose metaphors that engender healing.Less

The MCQs and SBAs in Intensive Care Medicine is a dedicated revision guide specifically directed towards the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM) exam. It provides excellent insight into a broad range of critical care topics and so is a handy resource for those also taking alternative exams, such as the European Diploma. The book also serves to provide a learning tool for those wanting knowledge around both clinical and science-based themes, common to the Intensive Care Unit and is a useful source of information for all allied healthcare professionals working in critical care, where often the wide scope of medical cases, unique equipment used and far-reaching literature base, can seem daunting.
MCQs and SBAs in Intensive Care Medicine provides 300 original multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and single best answer questions (SBAs) covering the breadth of the syllabus. Contribution is from authors who not only have personal experience of the exam but who also have exceptional teaching expertise. Self-assessment from the questions allows the individual to focus on the subjects most relevant to the exam but also allows rapid identification of areas where further attention is warranted. Each question is accompanied by a detailed answer and suggestions for further reading.
Intensive care medicine has faced unprecedented challenges in recent times and this book not only aims to aid the individual in passing the prerequisite exam, but it also will play a role in expanding our ICU community and providing a knowledge base in which we can provide the best care to our patients.Less

‘Skin Conditions in Young People’ provides information and evidence-based advice for teenagers and young adults, addressing the ways in which we can manage and live comfortably in our skin in the modern world. This book discusses the idea of ‘normal skin’, before then focusing on many of the common skin conditions that affect adolescents, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, sweating, urticaria, and vitiligo. Given that having a skin problem like this can affect the way you feel and act, particularly when you are young, there are therefore sections that also discuss living with the uncertainty of a visible and symptomatic skin condition, providing practical advice as to how to manage. This advice—and the book overall—is written primarily for young people, but the information will be useful for anyone with a skin problem, as well as anyone—parents, teachers, and health-workers included—involved with teenagers or young adults.Less
