This chapter recounts the moment when the author's apartment in Oran was bombed by Organisation armée secrète (OAS) members on June 20, 1961. The author vividly described the events following the bombings: the hallway of the apartment was overflowing with debris; the floor had caved in, leaving his family to walk on wood and fallen plaster. Black covered everything because the electrical power had been cut off. During that time, the author could clearly see the other rooms since his memory was fixated on the window and the entryway. At top of the stairs he could see that the enormous, heavy wooden door had been torn off and lay shattered on the steps. At the bottom of the stairs, on the gaping site of 11A, there was a huge hole.
