This historical chapter shows the traditional form and character of party management which had been closely linked to supportive union values and role. Though apparently in a pre-eminent position based on a dominant weight of finance and votes, unions were restrained by customary rules in their party activities, including the exertion of financial influence. And normally on most policies a union majority shared agreement with leading political allies on the Right of the party. This chapter explains why the solid underpinning of the party leaders was eventually de-stabilised. De-stabilisation and the problems that accompanied and followed it through the rise of the Left in the party, became permanently embedded in the folklore and fears of leading Labour politicians and passed down to the Blairite generation of management years later.
