This chapter examines Althusser’s essay on “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” with a view to laying the groundwork for a confrontation of Heidegger and Althusser. The focus will be on the concept of production, arguing that Althusser’s treatment of production needs to be brought into relation to Heidegger’s ontological considerations of the relation between production and truth. Yet while this might suggest a Heideggerian critique of Althusser, this chapter will further argue that, in Reading Capital, Althusser proposes a no less powerful critique of Heidegger’s phenomenological method. Moreover, Althusser’s concept of materiality as radical withdrawal from immediate legibility opens up the prospect of a productive dialogue with Heidegger’s attempt to think truth as the strife between concealment and unconcealment.
