This chapter examines the processes by which tombois and their girlfriends begin to take up their gender subjectivities during childhood. More specifically, it considers how tombois produce a gender that goes beyond or transgresses the normative but is nevertheless intelligible, coherent, and in many contexts allowable. Using their childhood narratives, it discusses the ways that both tombois and girlfriends enact gender and how they interact with socially significant others such as their families, extended kin, neighbors, and friends. The chapter draws on Henrietta Moore's and Pierre Bourdieu's analyses of self and subjectivity. It shows how early childhood practices shed light on tombois' subjectivities by serving as the basis for their present sense of self as men who are attracted to women.
