Chapter 1 situates the FFPU within a complex global environment that includes varied and disputed approaches to gender equity and women’s inclusion in peace and security initiatives. It explores the significant moves that have been made toward expanding and enhancing women’s access to UN peacekeeping work. The chapter shows how work on gender, peace, and security often remains staggered, slow, and hotly debated, yet it clearly continues to garner support and action from many actors. It also discusses Liberian women’s significant contributions to peace and security, which have been recognized both by their home country and through the UN mission in Liberia (UNMIL). Understanding this global context surrounding the FFPU is key to comprehending the parameters and implications of the FFPU’s work.
