This chapter analyzes the experiences of the post-1975 generation: the young Vietnamese who were born in Vietnam or in the United States after the official end of the Vietnam War. It investigates how young Vietnamese Americans, born and/or raised in the United States, create “memories” of a war that preceded their births or their consciousness, and how these memories are mediated by their parents’ direct experiences with and recollections of the war, by the politics of war commemoration practiced in the home, and by both Vietnam and the United States. Of interest in this chapter are the silences that prevail within refugee families and that arbitrate interpersonal relations, particularly their capacity to index structures of power, violence, and identity.
