This chapter addresses those aspects of current policy that relate, directly or indirectly, to issues of social equity in education. It focuses on the issue of equity and policy by looking at performance and participation in education in relation to ‘race’, gender, and social class; the emphasis given to the moral responsibilities of parenting and the problem of social exclusions; and the school policies of academies and trusts as ‘solutions’ to underachievement in socially disadvantaged areas.
