This chapter examines the interrelationships between the three themes discussed on the previous chapters — the ‘keeping going’ theme, the ‘staying me’ theme, and the ‘the slippery slope’ theme — their related categories and sub-categories and their relationship with the broader theme, ‘sustaining the self’. The chapter considers theoretical perspectives on identity to assist the understanding of the dynamic between the social and individual components of identity, the significance of social and cultural meanings and the reflexive interpretations made by older people as they demonstrate and maintain their sense of moral worth.

Keywords:   reflexive interpretations, identity, cultural meanings, older people, moral worth
