This chapter sets out the focus of the book, namely the work and family lives of people who provide care for ‘vulnerable’ children and young people. It focuses on four groups of workers: (i) residential social workers working in children's homes; (ii) family support workers, working either in social-work teams or family centres; (iii) foster carers working either for a local authority or an independent fostering agency; and (iv) childminders working with children placed and paid for by social services, often known as ‘community’ or ‘sponsored’ childminders. The reasons why this study is particularly timely in terms of policy, the basis for selecting the four groups of childcare workers, and the study's theoretical frameworks, are discussed. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
