This chapter explores structural and cultural changes in the UK that have taken place since 1960, which these theories attempt to explain. It paints a picture of the changed empirical context of family practices to explore their implications for a restudy. It describes demographic, industrial, and cultural change, looking particularly at the ways in which they have manifested themselves in Swansea, the setting for the research on which this book is based. The final part of the chapter describes research into families and social change carried out between 2001 and 2004 and considers some of the methodological difficulties that arise when conducting a restudy.
