This chapter looks at the changes which have occurred since the 1970s, and argues that many of the certainties which have previously supported housing research and policy are no longer considered true. The discussion in the chapter is concerned with the future direction of change in housing, especially in the United Kingdom. It identifies the key elements in debates about housing policy and research in two eras, and looks at the changes that are associated with residential mobility, residualisation, and privatisation. The chapter then reflects on the implications of these changes for how questions about the future development of the housing sector are addressed.

Keywords:   housing research, housing policy, residential mobility, residualisation, privatisation
