This chapter discusses some of the design principles for systematic action research. Despite of the diversity of action research designs represented in the previous chapters, there are several characteristics that need to be examined in systematic action research designs. These are: 1) an emergent research design; 2) an explanatory inquiry phase; 3) multiple inquiry streams operating at different levels; 4) a structure for connecting organic inquiry to formal decision-making; 5) a process for identifying cross-cutting links across inquiry streams; 6) a commitment to open boundary inquiry; and 7) the active development of distributed leadership. These seven design principles of a learning architecture that can hold considerable complexity form the focus of this chapter.
