This chapter reviews national data on road accidents for children, reviews current literature, and examines children's own perceptions of risk in the road environment with reference to research carried out by the authors. The study, involving schools in North London and Hertfordshire, set out to examine children's interactions and use of the road in the immediate vicinity of their school environment, on their journeys to and from school, and places used for play and leisure. Children's concerns and perceptions of risk in the road environment were explored, together with their strategies for dealing with risky situations. The chapter concludes with recommendations based upon current knowledge.
