This chapter examines the 2008 economic crisis in three small Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland and Sweden. It compares the responses in these countries during two periods of economic turbulence: 2008–10 and the financial crisis of the early 1990s. The point of departure is the inherent instability of financial markets and the challenge financial difficulties present for universal Nordic welfare states.
