This chapter sets out some of the ‘myths, puzzles, and problems’ that need to be explored and examined if progress is to be made in tackling some of the most resistant barriers to gender equality in labour-force participation. It specifically highlights some aspects of women's employment and labour-market situation that remain poorly understood. Some of the factors that lie behind women's lower pay are briefly outlined. The chapter then explores how work is valued, focusing on why so much of women's work is low paid. There is a relationship between ‘economic inactivity’ and poverty, but employment does not necessarily provide an escape from poverty for women. Finally, the chapter addresses some questions and concerns about what goes on within organisations and workplaces.
