This book discusses the effort to transform partnerships from a loose metaphor into a binding concept, aiming to capture the actual qualities of partnerships. It covers many concepts, involving a large number of social phenomena. The book includes the concept of partnership as the designation of specific relations between mutually independent organisations. Nowadays, partnerships not only cut across company boundaries or lines of business but also cross back and forth between the public, private, and voluntary sectors and across policy areas such as public assistance and public-hygiene issues. For example, in the United Nations, partnerships are often observed as a form of collaboration that can help overcome conflicts, encourage cross-sectoral learning, and turn differences into synergies. The book also discusses the reason why, in many different parts of society, so much energy is exerted to form partnerships, and explains the differences between contract and partnership.
