The future of digital scholarship will feature a mix of legacy and digital scholarly practices. Those who engage with them as both producers and consumers of digital media technologies will have to navigate this uneven landscape. While it is easy to conflate the struggle between democratization and commercialization with the transition from legacy to digital scholarship, we caution academics to not automatically refuse the digital as a symbolic resistance to the forces of neoliberalism. Scholars can forge individual identities online, keep control over scholarly work, share work openly, engage with popular media and with activists, and align with students through participatory pedagogy. Digitally networked activism will be crucial in efforts to make institutions of higher education more just and equitable. Scholars can serve the public good by enhancing and embracing digital practice.
