Designing a BRT system is a complex process involving strategic and tactical decisions involving a wide variety of actors and interests. There are many possible ways to conceive a BRT system, with different levels of integration with other transport modes, different network configurations (such as trunk and feeder and point to point services), and different degrees of openness. In this chapter we provide some general guidelines to orient these decisions. Network design of a BRT system is a complex process, which can be divided in two stages: corridor design and service design. On the first stage, location of the BRT corridors and stations is defined. This can be done using continuous or discrete approaches. On the second stage, services and their frequencies are designed. Different operation schemes can be considered, such as shot-turning, deadheading, and express services. We describe a case study illustrating the potential of express services, and their impact on capacity and even feasibility of a system.
