The role of race in schooling and the education system has been studied extensively but with minimal attention to the intricacies of the experiences of multiracial students. This chapter helps fill that gap. It provides an overview of existing research on this topic and a discussion of the influence of national trends in education on curriculum, including multicultural education, and the experiences of multiracial students. It also includes specific suggestions for policy makers and teachers on how to create optimal learning environments in schools that are more inclusive of and welcoming towards multiracial students.

Keywords:   race, schooling, multiracial students, multicultural education, multiracials, optimal learning environments
