This chapter describes the focus of the book. It then defines childhood studies and gives an account of its history emphasising the multiple roots and the diversity of viewpoints and methods within the field. The question as to whether or not childhood studies is an interdisciplinary field is considered. The methods followed in selecting interviewees and in conducting the interviews with key thinkers in childhood studies are set out.
