This chapter deals with the quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method approaches used in German policy studies. Quantitative methods include regression analysis, network analysis, as well as quantitative content analysis of policy debates. Qualitative methods comprise various designs of comparative case studies, single case studies, and the analysis of policy discourses. A mixed, standardised method is, for example, ‘Qualitative Comparative Analysis’ (QCA) which is increasingly also used in policy studies. The chapter introduces the various logics which are typical for these approaches and illustrates them with representative studies of the last few decades. The chapter also discusses potentials and prospects with regard to multi-method designs, when analysing public policy.
