Since the rise of analytical philosophy, the relation of philosophy and its past is more hotly debated among philosophers than ever. Some scholars analyse historical texts without reference to current debates and their terminology, while others pursue first-order philosophy by focusing on problems instead of doxography—that is, without reference to their predecessors. A growing group, though, doubts that philosophy can be studied effectively on the basis of this sharp division. But does the study of the history of philosophy contribute to current philosophy? And, if it does, what precisely is the contribution? Does making such a contribution depend on using a specific method which determines how the historical perspective is related to systematic philosophy and philosophy in general? More generally, how do our assumptions about the relationship between historical and systematic perspectives affect our methodology and metaphilosophy or philosophy of philosophy? This volume presents and debates answers to these questions, which deserve to be addressed in their own right and not just as an adjunct to other discussions. The contributors of this volume provide diverse answers based on historical references, stretching from ancient philosophy to the most current debates, and also refer to various philosophical sub-disciplines.Less

This introductory chapter presents the main arguments of the book: that the disparate ethical-historical perspectives developed by dominant and subordinated racialized groups have enormous consequences for how remedies to racialized oppression are adjudicated in the public sphere, and that as a result theorists of multiculturalism must begin to grapple with the obstacle the racialized politics of solidarity poses to the long-term project of achieving racial justice. It explains the concept of racialized solidarity and shows its pervasive presence in most diverse democracies, despite assumptions to the contrary. Key terms are defined and an overview of the objectives and structure of the book is provided.Less

This chapter offers a general introductory argument for maintaining an authentically historical perspective on the main issues arising from the key texts of modern philosophy, and for approaching even the briefest subsections of these texts with sensitivity to their full historical context. Without denying the need for developing some kind of corrective to the overly historical approaches that still dominate continental philosophy, it is argued that it is important to counter stereotypical views of Anglophone philosophy and to try to explain why, after decades of neglect, historical considerations have also become central components in the writing of many leading late-20th-century analytic philosophers.Less

This chapter discusses that the book tried to place Edmund Spenser in the context of different and coexisting conceptions of the past, particularly those influenced by religious, nationalistic, and scholarly perspectives on history. It investigates Early Modern England's absorption, use, and critical awareness of diverse modes of historical narrative, and argues for the significance of these modes in determining the writer's or reader's outlook on distant events. It illustrates the ways in which the poet engaged with the languages of history surrounding him. It concludes that the poet has a profound, playful, and above all, multiform sense of the past for he was deeply knowledgeable about the historical writing of his day—using it extensively across the full range of his literary production.Less

This chapter provides a guide for the preparation of an 8 to 10 hour teaching module on the history of epidemiology within a Master's or PhD curriculum. The text can also be of help for preparing a one to two hour session within the epidemiology teaching for undergraduate medical students. In an annex, a historical sketch offers a broad framework and some illustrative material for the module, to be supplemented by the references, particularly those denoted as ‘key’, at the end of the chapter. The objective of the module is to focus and raise the motivation of students for an historical perspective on epidemiology, promoting a critical yet positive attitude to the discipline placed within the context of the wider development of science in society. At a time when all scientific activities have increasing (and increasingly recognized and debated) implications of economic, social and ethical nature, this historical perspective becomes more of a necessity than a curiosity.Less

This chapter analyses the historical role of public research organizations for industrial growth and innovation in Norway, and the changes in this role over time. Public research organizations include research institutes and higher education institutions, and the chapter goes back in time to the 19th century. Like many other countries, Norway has a large number of research institutes involved in innovation, and these organizations have an equally long history as higher education institutions. Public sector research has co-evolved with the national industrial structure, and institutes and universities have played central roles in developing high technology sectors and activities as well as in modernizations of traditional industries.Less

Since the rise of analytical philosophy, the relation of current philosophy and its past is more hotly debated among philosophers than ever. In this Introduction, I first explain the main questions of this debate: Does the study of the history of philosophy contribute to philosophy? What is this contribution? Is there a specific method relating the historical perspective to current philosophy? What does this mean for our view on philosophy in general? Second, I critically discuss doubts about the usefulness of the debate and defend its importance. Third, I briefly discuss the relation of the historical perspective and its relation to the philosophy of philosophy, and finally I summarize the evolution of the debate and some of its main positions.Less

This chapter examines the opportunities and challenges presented by the incorporation of historical research and reasoning into management and organizational studies, and argues that the value of history lies in its ability to offer unique perspectives on management, organizations, and markets, rather than in providing a longitudinal version of social scientific explanations. Researchers interested in the use of history will need to recognize its distinct epistemic assumptions and its employment of a retrospective viewpoint to understand organizational behavior and cognition, and to understand the particular methodological approaches the historical perspective entails. The chapter introduces these issues and examines them against the backdrop of growing interest in the use of historical evidence and reasoning to study organizations. It introduces the essays contained in the collected volume Organizations in Time: History, Theory, Methods and frames them in relationship to the broad topic of historical methods in organizational research.Less

This chapter explores the public-private divide with regards to the development of occupational, professional or firm-based pensions in Britain after the Second World War, and how these were accommodated within state schemes. The first section traces the debate surrounding British pension reform in the 1960s, in the period following the introduction of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme. The second section briefly describes a history of other European pension developments in the same period. The third section offers a comparative overview of these developments. It is argued that when all forms of political and government intervention are taken together, the distinction between public and private in this area remains arbitrary and eclectic.Less

Richard Pipes, professor emeritus of history at Harvard University and author of the classic The Formation of the Soviet Union, served as national security advisor in the Reagan administration. He explained that from the point of view of ethnic roots, American culture is neutral, and therefore it has universal appeal. He thinks Communism is altogether dead in the world and utterly discredited. He describes Putin as a “smart” politician, but what Russia needs is a statesman, and this he is not.Less

In this chapter, we look into how environmental regulatory protectionism also expands to the operations of ‘baptist–bootlegger’ coalitions. These coalitions are said to provide the initial indication that a trade-restricting environmental regulation was implemented by the government for the protection of industry interests instead of environmental interests. A list of criteria is provided to demonstrate how to differentiate between situations in which the relative costs of produce are affected by environmental regulation and situations in which cross-border issues develop from environmental regulations. The chapter also offers a historical perspective of the trade–environment disputes, while giving emphasis to the institutional opportunities brought about during the NAFTA era through presenting ten cases from 1982 to the present.Less

This chapter examines the factors fueling anti-Americanism and support or sympathy for Al-Qaeda around the world. It considers the historical perspective in the Middle East and beyond: that the United States is a power-hungry imperialist actor seeking control over oil, a state bent on advancing its interests at the expense of local Muslims. If we accept the notion that the historical perspective is in play and distorts U.S. intentions, we can see how it can shape how actors view the United States. Arguably, it has contributed to the complex mosaic of motivations that drives terrorists and that has brought them some support or sympathy in the broader global audience. It is impossible to measure the impact of the historical perspective, but it appears to play a role in this region where history is vital in shaping modern views, and in a world of interconnections and real-time media coverage that feed the perspective and that are fed by it.Less

This chapter appraises elite discourse, media vilification, and selective government persecution of Middle Eastern and South Asian Muslims before 9/11, much similar to the designs in the aftermath. It provides the analysis of the media and political discourses that prepared the ground for the state's post-9/11 security response. It examines how the law and its enforcement have contributed to the hostility toward Arabs and Muslims in the United States. The demonization of Arabs and Muslims in the United States, as well as federal government actions that target Arabs and Muslims in the name of combating terrorism, began years before September 11, 2001. Racism against Arabs is not all the work of political activists. Media and film have found a ready audience for dangerous, one-dimensional images of Arabs and Muslims. It explains how Hollywood movies portray Arabs or Muslims as terrorists or otherwise places them in a negative, often less-than-human light. Arab women are often portrayed as weak and mute, covered in black, or as scantily clad belly dancers. These are the few examples through which the chapter justifies its title.Less

Giving an historical perspective on the changes in scientific thought over the last 100 years, this book explores the study of social evolution and the ongoing search for human nature. The book provides a detailed perspective on the reasons behind the shifting emphasis in social thought from biology, to culture, and again to biology. The book examines why these changes took place, the evidence and people fostering these changes and why students of human nature decided to accept this momentous change in thought. It suggests varying ideologies as the underlying force behind this shift in the study of social science. From Darwin's theory that human social behaviour has drastically evolved from animals, to the belief that human experience serves as the basic differentiating factor in humans, this book provides an examination of the roots of human behaviour.Less

This book reviews selected topics in the law of succession from a comparative and, in some instances, a historical perspective, explaining that the primary function of the law of succession is to identify both the persons entitled to succeed to the deceased and also the property they are to receive. The central thesis of this chapter is that changes in the law of succession have been detected and explained principally by means of comparative scholarship. There are two general issues identified by that scholarship. The first is the significance of social and economic change and its impact on aspects of the law of succession, and the second is that the identification and analysis of these changes have been the stimulus for a new mission for comparative researchers in the field of the law of succession.Less

This chapter discusses the dynamics of enslavement using a historical perspective. It studies the courts' reluctance to use the term ‘slavery’ in modern cases, as seen in the case of Siwa Akofa Siliadin. It then discusses the dynamics of enslavement in Santiago and New Orleans, and cites the case of a certain refugee who faced the effort to create a ‘genuine right of legal ownership’ over her. Finally, the chapter views enslavement as a process.Less

This chapter explains how the historical perspective of Scott's fiction permits the liberal conscience to be confronted with identities, beliefs and the kinds of allegiance that it has supposedly renounced. It argues that this confrontation allows an unprecedented fictional engagement with several enduring social, moral and political problems presented by the arrival of liberalism. The chapter also identifies two kinds of criticism, and studies two novels on the complicated treatment of Covenanting history and the conciliatory approach to history.Less
