Within Arab cultural discourses, autobiographical film offers a novel mode of self-expression. Its importance cannot be underestimated, taking into consideration cinema’s popularity in the Arab world and its accessibility to audiences of all ages, social backgrounds and ideologies. Filmic autobiography possibly offers a more intimate connection between the filmmakers and their audience than a traditional literary text. This chapter explores modes of personal and communal identity chosen for visual representation and theorizes Arab autobiographical film, using Youssef Chahine’s Alexandria Trilogy as case studies: “Alexandria.. Why?” (1978), “An Egyptian Story” (1982), and “Alexandria, Again and Forever” (1989).Less

This book presents an up-to-date study on Youssef Chahine's work. The methodological approach of the book, and more precisely the discussion of the theme of Arab national unity from a post-colonial point of view, emphasizes the ideological underpinnings of this Egyptian director's themes as well as his esthetics. The book focuses on the interaction between Chahine's personal and political preoccupations, his eclectic cinematic style, and his devotion to connecting with a wide audience of filmgoers.Less
