An overview of international human rights and social justice, this introductory text focuses on current global problems of pressing concern for social workers. It addresses topics such as healthcare, violence against women, war and conflict, forced labor and child soldiers, in a manner which encourages students to think critically about such problems, research the issues, and get involved with organizations that are working on them. The content contains narratives of individuals suffering from these social problems, as well as suggestions for what students can do to create change: both now and what they will be able to do as professionals. The author analyzes problems in their cultural contexts in order to help the reader understand how they developed, why they persist, and what the local and international responses — both governmental and non-governmental — have been.Less

This chapter explains the theoretical and empirical basis of the Taking Charge group curriculum, including its developmental and strengths-based, solution-focused frameworks, and the life skills interventions of active, social problem solving, and coping. These life skills are taught in order to accelerate learning across the four life domains, and are based on social learning and cognitive-behavioral interventions. The importance and potential effectiveness of these types of skills with adolescent mothers are discussed. The chapter further explains the importance of the task-centered group approach that is used to teach the cognitive-behavioral skills to the adolescent mothers. Finally, it discusses why we believe that brief group programs like the Taking Charge group curriculum are important to schools and why they can be effective in a school setting.Less

A social or critical perspective keeps the contextual, relational, and linguistic constitution of social issues to the fore, and is also mindful of the political and social consequences of particular linguistic constructions in social life. This perspective is important for the study of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy, as much public and professional commentary has a tendency to individualize the problem, ignoring the political and cultural context in which the abuse and its management takes place, and the professional and political discourses in which the subject is narrated. The topics discussed in this chapter and the questions they raise provide a corrective to the more individually focused work discussed in Chapter 4 . The chapter aims to put the “social” back into a consideration of social problems, and in this regard three main topics are central to this endeavor. The discursive constitution of social problems stresses the importance of language and power relations in how social problems take their form. The changing understanding of child abuse situates the abuse of children in the context of evolving understanding of childhood and of sexuality and the family. The section on creating offending identities places discussion of the child sexual offender in the context of wider international debates on how identity is constructed and on crime and criminal policy in general.Less

There have been major shifts in the framework of social policy and welfare across Europe. Adopting a multi-level, comparative, and interdisciplinary approach, this book develops a critical analysis of policy change and welfare reform in Europe. It applies a dynamic and change-oriented perspective to shed light on policy changes that are often poorly understood in the welfare literature, and contributes to a further development of the theoretical and conceptual frameworks for understanding social change. Using citizenship as a focus, several dimensions of change are analysed simultaneously: changes in the discipline of social policy itself; the changing character of social problems; changes in social policy and citizenship; and the emergence of new forms of social integration. The book also speculates on how different dimensions of change are interlinked.Less

A hallmark of the 20th and early 21st centuries has been the emergence of civil society as a force for social change. This chapter defines international civil society as “those nongovernmental/nonprofit organizations that have cross-border linkages.” Thus, it entails political processes and relationships that are established outside a given nation-state and its control. A variety of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have been at the forefront of advocacy for a more just global social order, tackling persistent social inequalities and addressing such macro processes as the global economy and trade, war and armed conflict, international migration, and the realization of human rights, to name a few important domains. This chapter discusses the rise of NGO influence on global policy and politics, and advocacy to address structural roots of global social problems.Less

This book provides an introduction to the concept of Social Innovation for readers interested in social and public policy. It explains why social and public policy analysts, policy makers and practitioners should become familiar with this idea, and explores how social innovation relates to key debates and core issues in public welfare. The book explains how social innovation relates to more familiar concepts, such as entrepreneurship, technological and business innovation and social enterprise. It discusses the social and economic challenges behind the growing interest in social innovation across the world. It illustrates the distinctive characteristics of social innovations through case studies which demonstrate how they address such issues as social isolation and mental health, childcare, education, homelessness, integrating migrant communities and financial exclusion. The book discusses in detail how social innovations address social problems in three substantive areas: food poverty, care provision and employment. It draws upon comparative research evidence to outline and analyse how social innovations have developed inventive responses to these complex challenges, and assesses their respective impact on well being. The book concludes by discussing the implications of social innovation for existing social welfare systems and social citizenship rights. It highlights some of the questions raised by social innovation for social and public policy reform and identifies potential limitations and concerns. It argues that those with an interest in social welfare policy should critically engage with the arguments for and evidence relating to social innovation.Less

Following reflections on how scientists in social work and other fields have contemplated the challenge of contributing to the application of their work, I consider four questions: 1. How should we think about the uses and misuses of science in social work? 2. What should we make of the demands for the impact of science? 3. Are some forms of social work science less susceptible to influence than others? 4. What is the relationship between knowing and doing in social work science? I close the chapter, and the book, with a reminder of the limits of social work science.Less

This chapter revisits the relationship between politics and social work in the United Kingdom. It untangles the complexities of the politicisation of social work and its consequences, arguing that in many respects the debate misses a more fundamental problem. Focusing on the extent to which social work is political obscures the fact that, in contemporary society, politics has become social work. Intervening in the minutiae of individuals' lives has long been the concern of social work in its various guises. Increasingly, though, the state, via health and social care initiatives, is encroaching ever further into this terrain. It is in this sense that rather than a re-politicisation of social work, a depoliticisation is suggested. For those concerned with social problems today and wishing to create the conditions for social change, we do need to foster a climate where commonalities can be forged and relationships developed. There is no need to politicise social work. That was done many years ago. Today the task is to get politics out of social work and therapy out of politics.Less

The phrase Social problem suggests an undesirable state of affairs for which people hope to find a practical cure, whereas social evil may imply a degree of scepticism, realism or despair about whether any remedy can be found. The overall impact of Edwardian public inquiries turned out to be cautiously optimistic, reassuring and anti-alarmist in tone. The aftermath of First World War saw a resurgence of anxiety about social relations in Britain; but this was to take a very different form from that of the Edwardian decade. The inter-war phenomenon of mass unemployment exactly fitted the notion of a dire social evil. Many aspects of contemporary social evils have come about because the very nature of that prosperity has in certain aspects been corrosive of interpersonal and communal ties, and even pathological in its influence on social relations and human behaviour.Less

Multivariate procedures allow social workers and other human services researchers to analyze complex, multidimensional social problems and interventions in ways that minimize oversimplification. This book provides an introduction to four procedures for the analysis of multiple dependent variables: multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), multivariate multiple regression (MMR), and structural equation modeling (SEM). Each procedure is presented in a way that allows readers to compare and contrast them in terms of appropriate research context; required statistical assumptions, including levels of measurement of variables to be modeled; analytical steps; sample size; and strengths and weaknesses. This book facilitates course extensibility in scope and depth by allowing instructors to supplement course content with rigorous statistical procedures. The book provides detailed annotated examples using Stata, SPSS (PASW), SAS, and Amos.Less
