This chapter explains that both the identity and image of Germanys have evolved considerably. The spontaneous outbreak of patriotism and national pride that emerged first when the country hosted the World Cup in 2006 marked a radical departure from the traditional suppression of a positive identity for Germany. The chapter provides ample documentation that just as Germans now feel very positive about their country, culture, and standard of living, so too does much of the rest of the world. Such a positive identity and image contribute to the strong economic performance by attracting human capital to, and foreign direct investment in, Germany.Less
